ASHBY: On 4th of July, it’s important to build on promise of Declaration of Independence

June 2406:44 AM

On an unseasonably cool Thursday, July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress declared total independence from King George III and Great Britain. In doing so, the founding fathers threw off the yoke of tyranny, creating a new form of government whose power was to be derived only from the consent of the people they govern. Radical at the time, the actions of men such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson paved the way for the United States Constitution just 13 years later and what we know today as the longest-standing democracy in the world. view article arw

Seguin ISD gets update on districtwide bond projects

June 2406:38 AM

(Seguin) — Fast and furious are how district officials are describing the progress of bond projects currently in the works across the Seguin ISD. Sharing the district’s most recent update is Bill Lewis, the consultant tasked with overseeing the district’s bond projects. First on his list was the announcement that the addition of new classrooms at Ball Early Childhood Center is officially complete. He says not only did the project finish earlier than expected but staff have already moved in for the upcoming school year. “Ball Early Childhood Center, we have a 100 percent completed project over there. It turned out beautiful. It looks just like a great extension of the previous building — the color schemes, the looks — of course, the Koehler Company, did the original. They redid that back in 2010,” said Lewis. view article arw

Patrick Rebukes Phelan for Shelving Ten Commandments Classroom Legislation

June 2308:30 AM

In the latest move exposing tension between leadership in the House and the Senate, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has publicly condemned Speaker Dade Phelan for effectively killing legislation aimed at mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. The measure passed the Texas Senate but was stalled in the House last year, sparking outrage among its proponents. Now Louisiana has beaten Texas by becoming the first state to pass the measure into law. “Texas WOULD HAVE been and SHOULD HAVE been the first state in the nation to put the Ten Commandments back in our schools,” Patrick declared in a social media post. The proposed measure was authored by State Sen. Phil King and passed by the Senate. However, when the legislation reached the House, Phelan allowed it to languish in committee, ensuring it never reached a floor vote by placing it on the calendar far too late. view article arw

A beach buried by the Mount Vesuvius eruption 2,000 years ago just reopened

June 2108:53 AM

It was late into the night when the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago sent volcanic material over the beach at the ancient city of Herculaneum, where hundreds of men, women and children — and even a soldier — huddled in and around stone boat houses, awaiting rescuers who would never arrive. The A.D. 79 volcanic eruption had buried the seaside and left the beach out of reach to visitors, until now — when newly-completed restoration works mean visitors can set foot on the beach, as it appeared before the disaster, for the first time. The restoration of the beach allows people to see the site “from the same position” as “the ancient Roman people,” Francesco Sirano, the director of the Herculaneum archaeological park, said in an interview Thursday. “The visitors have to go down through a tunnel … and it’s like we go back two thousand years, and then suddenly you have the beach.” While Herculaneum is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Pompeii, it was also destroyed by Mount Vesuvius — and the beach area is known for holding the remains of at least 330 people who died there, sheltering in the boat houses in hope of being rescued. Those remains, discovered in the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s, were mostly related women, children and babies, along with their dogs and sheep, while adults and young men were thought to have perished on the beach itself, according to researchers. view article arw

Texas to begin construction this year on seven new psychiatric hospital projects

June 2108:48 AM

Texas will begin building seven new state psychiatric hospital projects this year as it continues to attempt to address the mental health crisis. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission projects are funded by $1.5 billion, which lawmakers approved in 2023 to expand, renovate and build new facilities across the state. The agency owns and operates nine state hospitals and one residential treatment center for youth.  Gov. Greg Abbott detailed the plans in a press release Thursday.“Last year, I signed a law to provide crucial funding to expand and build new, modern mental health facilities throughout Texas,” Abbott said. “These new state hospital projects will help ensure that Texans experiencing a mental health issue have access to mental health professionals and high-quality treatments to address their needs.”

Conroe ISD school board strengthens controversial library review process, OK’s removing book from some schools

June 2108:41 AM

Trustees Tuesday passed a revised version to a controversial library book policy, making the process lengthier. They also green flagged the removal of a graphic novel from intermediate school book shelves.   Trustees Tuesday passed a revised version to a controversial library book policy, making the process lengthier. They also green flagged the removal of a graphic novel from intermediate school book shelves.  Six hours into a marathon school board meeting Tuesday night, Conroe school district trustees overwhelmingly approved revisions to a controversial library book review policy that lets trustees have the final say on which books can stay on the shelves.  Trustees also approved a motion to remove the graphic novel “Drama” by Raina Telgemeier from its intermediate and junior high schools after complaints from parents. The book had previously been removed from the district’s elementary schools, and is now only in Conroe high schools. The book has sparked national controversy and has been the target of other book bans. In a reconsideration request form, one district parent said she doesn’t recommend the graphic novel for all ages. The book is listed on Barnes & Noble for 10 to 14-year-olds. She cited specific instances in the book of a boy and girl kissing and a boy having a crush on another boy.  The reconsideration went through the dedicated committee first, which made the decision it should stay on intermediate-level shelves. The parent appealed the committee’s decision, claiming the school is “complicitly grooming and sexualizing children.”  The school district has removed 125 books from its catalog of 1.2 million library books. view article arw

After decades of lobbying by Christian conservative donors, school voucher legislation may finally have the votes

June 2108:41 AM

Gov. Greg Abbott succeeded in his campaign against Republicans who defied him on school vouchers. Now he may finally get the votes he needs to pass a bill.  As proponents of private school vouchers racked up win after win across the country in recent years, the largest Republican-led state in the nation remained stubbornly outside their grasp — until now. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott succeeded in persuading primary voters to remove from office members of his party who had defied him by voting against legislation that would allow the use of state money to pay for private school tuition.  Abbott’s success campaigning against fellow Republicans during the primary election sent a clear message that disloyalty would not be tolerated even for those who supported other priorities he outlined. If the pro-voucher candidates who Abbott supported in their primaries win in the November general election, as many are expected to, the governor argues he has the votes to finally pass legislation.                                    view article arw

Firestorm erupts over requiring women to sign up for military draft

June 2108:30 AM

Senate Democrats have added language to the annual defense authorization bill to require women to register for the draft, prompting a backlash from Republicans and social conservatives and complicating the chances of moving the bill on the Senate floor before Election Day. Conservatives led by Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) are certain to attempt to remove the provision requiring women to register for the draft, which could present a tough vote for Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and other Democrats in tight reelection races. Republican candidate Sam Brown, who is running against Rosen, is already making it an issue in the Nevada Senate race. Brown, an Army veteran who was severely burned by an improvised explosive device explosion, slammed Rosen in a video for voting to require women to sign up for the draft. view article arw

It’s only going to get worse,” she said. Hunter, who represents District 1, was talking about the multimillion-dollar budget deficit Austin ISD is facing. Trustees and district officials have spent months trying to prepare the public for the fact that money is going to be tight and it’s unlikely Texas will lend a helping hand. view article arw

Enrollment, attendance down at Lufkin ISD

June 2008:41 AM

The enrollment and attendance at Lufkin ISD has slightly dipped, according to chief financial officer Jill Gaston.  The Lufkin ISD Board of Trustees hosted its first summer budget workshop Tuesday at the Lufkin ISD Administration Building. Lufkin ISD had 7,046 students in the fall of 2023, Gaston said. At the end of May, that number fell to 6,889 students, a dropoff of 157 students.  “It's no secret that Lufkin ISD has faced its share of challenges moving forward based on the last couple of budgets adopted,” Gaston said. “Studies around Lufkin predicted a slight decrease in enrollment numbers. We have to plan for the slide again. We are going to drop the number by another 200 students. We hope to get to a real number as far as revenue is concerned and allow us to plan a much, much more conservative, frugal budget.” view article arw

“Grooming Grounds”: How a Statewide Network Seeks to Sexualize Students

As of June 17, 2024, their website stated these clubs are available for 46 percent of Texas students. Parent education advocate Aileen Blachowski called these clubs “grooming grounds.” In Texas Scorecard’s previous investigative report, she shared her experience of helping a family in California. Their sixth-grade daughter attended such a club, titled “We The People GSA,” thinking it was a history club. Louisiana becomes 1st state requiring Ten Commandments be posted in classrooms

June 2008:40 AM

Why it matters: The new law, signed Wednesday by Gov. Jeff Landry, will face immediate legal challenges. The big picture: Other states, including Texas, South Carolina and Utah recently attempted similar measures, but none got their bills across the legislative finish line with the same requirement as Louisiana's. Those efforts began after Supreme Court rulings in cases like Kennedy v. Bremerton School District indicated a looser interpretation of the Constitution's Establishment Clause, which prevents state-sponsored religion. Louisiana's new law requires a Protestant translation of the Ten Commandments be posted in all classrooms within schools requiring public funding, including colleges and universities. Friction point: A group of civil rights organizations said they would immediately file suit to challenge the new law, according to a press release. view article arw

The partnerships involve the exchange of paperwork, rather than hundreds of students, between the public…FDISD implemented the Texas Education Agency program — utilized by 54 districts across the state as of last year, according to the agency — for the first time this school year to bolster its strained budget.
