Austin ISD offers paid experience through summer internship program
Austin Independent School District just launched its summer internship program, offering paid work experience for dozens of high school students in the Austin area. According to an Austin ISD website post, the program offers 36 students work experience, skill development, and community engagement. For many of these students, it’s their first time in the workforce. view article

Waxahachie ISD hires new director of fine arts
The Waxahachie ISD board of trustees voted to hire Gary Barnard as its new director of fine arts during a called meeting Monday. Barnard, who has nearly 20 years of experience in public education, will oversee the district’s fine arts programs for all students from pre-K through 12th grade, as well as UIL academics programming. Barnard comes to WISD from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, where he most recently served as an assistant principal at Colleyville Heritage High School. He has extensive experience as a band director at Colleyville Heritage High School, McKinney North High School, and Braswell High School (Denton ISD), as well as several years of experience as an associate band director at Carroll High School, Birdville High School, and Richland Middle School (Birdville ISD). view article

Eanes ISD board approves budget, includes pay increase for teachers and staff
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Eanes ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the budget for the 2024-25 school year at its June 18 regular meeting. It provides a 2% pay increase for teachers and staff and adjusts to declining enrollment. According to the board, the approved budget includes $189.4 million in revenue, countered by $190.6 million in expenditures, with $94.7 million “recaptured” by the State of Texas resulting in a budgeted deficit of 1.2 million. view article
‘Everything is stacked against the student’ | STAAR scores in math down for Austin ISD students post-pandemic
Results from the STAAR tests are in, and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) reports that scores for math and science are down across all grade levels. That pattern is clear when looking at scores for Austin ISD. In the spring of 2019, 69% of the district's students who took the Algebra I STAAR test met their grade level. This year, that number dropped drastically, to just 39%. view article

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)-- Socorro Independent School District held a board meeting to discuss how to correct the error that overcharged tax payers. TEA conservator, Dr. Michael Hinojosa says the error over charged tax payers around $24 individually and totaled $2 million. Hinojosa says they don't know how the error occurred but they will conduct an investigation. view article
Why do so many Austin-area school districts have budget deficits?
At an Austin ISD school board meeting back in March, Trustee Candace Hunter shared a sobering message. “There is no rescue coming. There’s no one coming to save us. It’s only going to get worse,” she said. Hunter, who represents District 1, was talking about the multimillion-dollar budget deficit Austin ISD is facing. Trustees and district officials have spent months trying to prepare the public for the fact that money is going to be tight and it’s unlikely Texas will lend a helping hand. Originally, administrators estimated Austin ISD would be about $30 million in the hole next fiscal year. According to a presentation earlier this month though, that figure is now about $56 million, despite the district identifying tens of millions of dollars in spending cuts. view article

People don’t always like to hear about the success of a system, and the very words “the system works” can create some negative reactions. However, it is sometimes very true, and the Harlingen school district has proven many times that its system does indeed work. The Harlingen system has proven itself once again that it works, not only in the instruction of its students but also in the career development of its teachers and administrators. One of the Harlingen school district’s former administrators, Dr. Joseph Villarreal, will soon take the helm as the new superintendent at the Santa Maria Independent School District. Klein ISD student accused of orchestrating cyber attack that disrupted STAAR testing charged with 3rd-degree felony
The 18-year-old Klein Forest High School student who was responsible for the cyber attacks that STAAR testing for thousands of students in the district appeared in court Friday morning. The Galena Park ISD educator is proving just how much teachers have the power to ignite the passion and love for learning that students need to succeed. Mrs. LaTisha Guillory, an English teacher at North Shore Senior High 10th Grade Center, was named the 2023 Houston Area Alliance Black School Educator (HAABSE) Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year for the entire Houston area in February 2024, a recognition given to educators who exemplify excellence in their field. The purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Awards is to say “thank you” to teachers for the outstanding job they do in working with children. ‘He’s afraid to leave his home’ | Arrests made after mother says teenage son was attacked on Pflugerville ISD school bus
Kelsie Trevino said her 13-year-old son is still reeling from an attack on a Pflugerville ISD school bus on June 18. Two adults were arrested and charged in the incident, while two juveniles involved were also arrested, according to the school district. The charges include injury to a child, engaging in organized criminal activity and assault with bodily injury. view article

Unable to fill vacancies in its police department, South San Antonio Independent School District has decided to employ school marshals to comply with a state mandate requiring an armed guard on every campus. Brownsville Independent School District trustee Daniella Lopez Valdez said she will use her election to the Legislative Committee of the Texas Association of School Boards to advocate directly to state leaders in Austin for full funding for Texas public schools. Lopez Valdez was elected to the committee at TASB’s Summer Leadership Institute in San Antonio a week ago. ‘There were red flags’: Mom says she tried to warn districts about now- former Denton ISD employee accused of online solicitation of a minor
The Denton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a two-day sting operation that led to the arrest of 23 individuals. 27-year-old Justin Wallace Carter, a now-former employee at Denton High School, was among the individuals arrested on Friday, June 14th. He was charged with online solicitation of a minor. Carter's social media accounts show he was an assistant football coach at Denton High School. Midland ISD STAAR test results released
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the spring 2024 State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) 3-8 results of Friday, June 14. The percentage of MISD students meeting grade-level standards in reading increased in grades 4-7, with a 6 percent increase in 4th grade, according to spring 2024 preliminary reports. MISD also saw gains in fifth and sixth-grade math, with a six percentage-point increase in 5th-grade math. view article

The Fort Worth Independent School District’s plans to provide infant and toddler care at its Morningside Elementary campus have been put on pause amid an ongoing facilities study, which is expected to result in school closures within the district. The proposed early childhood center at Morningside was to be the first space of its kind in Fort Worth ISD with plans to open at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year in August.
