Dallas ISD and Garland ISD trustees: This is why we released our accountability ratings

September 0908:16 AM

As Texas students were returning to classrooms last month, we school board trustees were anxiously awaiting the Texas Education Agency release of A-F accountability ratings. We were disappointed when the publication of the letter grades for our districts and campuses was halted by another lawsuit. It’s not because we were looking forward to showing off or competing with other districts. As board presidents for two of the largest public school districts in Texas, we are committed to transparency. In order to make the best decisions for the children we serve, it’s important we look clearly and honestly at education outcomes, even — especially — when data reveals we still have work to do. view article arw

Getting Results: Playground project at Calvert ISD completed after manufacturer steps in

September 0908:15 AM

What began as a stalled playground project at Calvert ISD is now complete, thanks to the generosity of a playground equipment manufacturer. The project, funded by federal pandemic relief money and overseen by the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse (BVCASA), came to a halt after the contractor, Gulf Coast Recreation, failed to finish the installation. BVCASA paid $31,705 to Gulf Coast Recreation in March for the purchase and installation of new playground equipment. However, despite the payment and initial assurances, the contractor did not fulfill its obligations, leaving the equipment unassembled and exposed to the elements for months. The delay left the community disappointed and children without a place to play. view article arw

Austin ISD settles lawsuit over delayed special ed evaluations, creates fund for affected students

September 0608:35 AM

Austin ISD settles lawsuit over delayed special ed evaluations, creates fund for affected students    A federal court signed off on a settlement Wednesday between Disability Rights Texas and Austin ISD over its backlog of special education evaluations. The settlement requires the district to establish a fund to help cover the cost of services for students who were affected by the delayed evaluations.  Disability Rights Texas Supervising Attorney Kym Davis Rogers said in a statement the group was pleased to reach the agreement on behalf of Austin ISD students.  “Most importantly, AISD has committed to the timely evaluation of students with disabilities and established a $4 million dollar fund to provide compensatory education to students whose evaluations were delayed,” she said.  K  nneth M. Walker II, general counsel for Austin ISD, said in a statement to KUT that students who are eligible for assistance under the deal must meet certain criteria. For one thing, they have to be currently enrolled i  the district. They also have to have experienced a more than 20-day delay to their evaluation between March 1, 2020, and the end of the 2024-25 school year.  When the lawsuit was filed in 2021, Disability Rights Texas said at least 800 students had not received an initial evaluation within the timeframe required by state and federal law. Evaluations, which determine whether a student has a disability, are the first step in the process of getting them any services or support they need. Some Austin ISD families had waited as long as a year for their children to be evaluated. view article arw
