September 1108:40 AM

More than a third of newly hired teachers in Texas lack certification, as more and more public school districts turn to uncertified educators amid a statewide teacher shortage, a Hearst analysis of Texas Education Agency data showed. “I think everybody who’s concerned about their own family’s education should be really worried about this, because the quality control has just completely collapsed for the state of Texas,” said Michael Marder, a physics professor at the University of Texas at Austin and executive director of UTEACH, which prepares STEM public school teachers. September 11 Educational Resources

September 1108:30 AM

On America’s darkest day, September 11, 2001, innocent civilians were targeted and a total of 2,977 people were killed in what became the worst terrorist attack to ever take place on American soil.  Among the fatalities that day were 406 first responders, made up of 343 members of the New York City Fire Department, 23 members of the New York City Police Department, 37 members of the New York and New Jersey Port Authority Police Department and 3 members of the New York State Office of Court Administration. There was a catastrophic loss of life that day, and many more lives have been lost since. More than 100,000 people continue to suffer today from 9/11-related illnesses. Americans were driven to enlist in our military ranks to fight terrorism after September 11, 2001, and over 7,000 U.S. military members have died in the line of duty fighting the War on Terror.  The following materials are educational 9/11 resources that are verified by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, created from the tragedy of 9/11. Tunnel to Towers helps America keep its promise to NEVER FORGET the 2,977 people who gave their lives for us, including the brave first responders, those who continue to suffer with 9/11-related illnesses, those who made the ultimate sacrifice serving our communities and our country – and all who continue to. view article arw

Dan Patrick asks Senate to consider bills to unmask protesters, change runoff elections

September 1108:30 AM

The new list includes many right-wing priorities, and would escalate Republicans’ wars against diversity, equity and inclusion programs and review laws to keep noncitizens off voter rolls.  Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wants the Texas Senate to reexamine how the state conducts runoff elections and recommend new laws aimed at stopping protesters from covering their faces when the Legislature meets next year. On Tuesday, Patrick — who oversees the Senate and has serious power over what bills it passes — released a second round of directives for Senate committees, building on a list of 57 items from earlier this year that focused on, among other things, housing costs, school vouchers, property tax relief and strengthening the power grid. The new list includes a number of right-wing priorities, and would escalate Republicans’ wars against diversity, equity and inclusion programs.  Last year, Texas lawmakers banned such programs at public universities — prompting layoffs and protests at some schools. Now, Patrick wants lawmakers to “examine programs and certificates” at higher education institutions that still have DEI policies, and then “expose” them as “damaging and not aligned with state workforce demands.” He then wants lawmakers to recommend “any needed reforms to ensure universities are appropriately educating students to meet workforce needs.” view article arw

Should Texas elementary students learn biblical stories in schools? SBOE to hear public

September 1008:30 AM

A debate brewing all summer is expected to come to a head this week at a State Board of Education meeting when members will discuss the state-developed curriculum whose elementary grade lessons have come under fire because of the biblical stories mixed in the materials.  The reading curriculum has drawn criticism from parents and interest groups who say the content gives too much weight to Christianity over other faiths and handles the Christian faith in a preferential way. Texas Education Agency officials, on the other hand, have insisted that the materials offer students a balanced context of the cultures they’ll encounter in the world. view article arw

Breaking down Travis County’s proposed tax hike targeting child care costs

September 1008:30 AM

Editor's note: To view this story as it appeared in the August South Central, North Central and Southwest Austin/Dripping Springs editions, click here. After an outpouring of support from local child care advocates, Travis County commissioners approved a measure Aug. 13 to ask voters for a tax increase on the November ballot. Property owners across the metro are being asked to support lowering annual child care costs. Currently, the cost for one child to attend daycare in Travis County is comparable with a year of tuition at The University of Texas at Austin, officials said. If approved by voters, the increase would raise an additional $77 million annually—an estimated $288 total tax increase to the average homeowner—to fund a multi-pronged approach aimed at reducing the burden of child care costs for the community’s most vulnerable populations. read more arw

Why Austin ISD is required to create $4M summer special education programs for students

September 0908:35 AM

The Austin school district will have to create a $4 million fund and set up a summer program for students who were denied timely special education evaluations and other services, as part of a settlement agreement with Disability Rights Texas, a nonprofit that sued the district in 2021 over the overdue evaluations.  The school district will also have to clear its backlog of overdue special education evaluations by the end of 2024, grant some students out-of-district evaluations without objection and pay Disability Rights Texas $75,000 in legal fees, according to documents released by the U.S. Western District Court of Texas this week.  The settlement wraps up a case filed at the height of the district’s challenges with a chronic pile of past due requests to evaluate students for special education services as well as complaints about the delivery of those services. The Austin district is under a state-appointed monitor to oversee the district's efforts to eliminate the yearslong backlog and improve the delivery of special education services, as part of a September 2023 agreement with the Texas Education Agency. view article arw
