Others disagree on how far those rights go, and whether or not they interfere with a student's educational rights. view article arw

Lt. Gov. Patrick Pushes For Bail Reform Again Following Murder of 12-Year-Old

July 0105:48 AM

The proposed law is called “Jocelyn’s Law” in memory of slain 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray.  Following the brutal murder of a 12-year-old girl in Houston, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick promises action—stating that he will ensure the Texas Senate passes new bail reform legislation.  “I just left the funeral of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Her alleged killers, both here illegally, with one actually wearing an ankle monitor given to him by the federal government, are charged with brutally murdering her last week,” Patrick posted on X. “Jocelyn’s family was shocked any bail was given in this case.”  Patrick stated he’ll address this in the next session. Open Letter to Governor Abbott On Behalf of Texas Public Schools

June 2808:45 AM

In your recent response to Representative Rosenthal, you rejected his plea for a special session to address school funding, asserting that the responsibility for budget shortfalls in Texas is not your fault. You couldn't be more wrong, Governor.  As chief executive of our great State, you are constitutionally bound to support an appropriate, free education system for Texas schoolchildren, even though you abdicated that responsibility during the last legislative session when you sacrificed the well-being of our public schools on the altar of your government vouchers plan, also known euphemistically as school choice, parent empowerment, and educational freedom.  Your speciously worded letter conveniently omits several critical factors impacting our education system. It attempts to shift blame for the State's failure to take action - YOUR failure to take action - to fund our schools. The people of Texas are no longer willing to listen to your false facts. view article arw

State Board of Education considers approving 5 new charter schools in Texas

June 2808:41 AM

On Wednesday, Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath recommended SBOE members approve the opening of Infinite Minds in Arlington, Pathway Academy in Big Spring, The Texas Girls School in Austin, Unparalleled Preparatory Academy in Manor and Visionary STEM Academy in Terrell.  The SBOE is slated to hold a preliminary vote Wednesday and will decide Friday whether to move the charter schools’ applications forward. If it does, the applications will return to the TEA for a final review.Representatives from each of the schools also gave presentations to the 15-member body. Some of the schools would focus on making STEM careers more accessible to students and equipping them with entrepreneurship skills while at least one other would place a heavy emphasis on literacy.  The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one.  The timing of the new charter proposals frustrated some teacher advocacy groups and public education advocates, who say the new schools would siphon state funds away from traditional school districts.  State lawmakers failed to approve additional funds for public schools during last year’s legislative session amid the fight for school vouchers, which would allow families to use taxpayer dollars to pay for private and religious schools. read more arw

Alvin ISD calls November bond election

June 2808:30 AM

The Alvin ISD school board this month called a Nov. 5 bond election to fund more than $380 million in projects to address future facility needs. If approved by voters, bond sales would not increase the tax rate, district officials reported, and taxpayers with a homestead exemption are estimated to see a 2-cent decrease in 2024 and 2025 tax rates. The board on June 11 heard a list of recommendations from a nearly 100-member citizen advisory committee that included parents and business leaders from the Pearland portion of Alvin ISD along with elected officials. “We as a committee stayed on task and kept in mind the entire district,” said committee co-chair and Shadow Creek High parent Travis McGuire told the school board on June 11. “The focus was critical needs over the next five years.” Bond projects include $136 million for two new elementary campuses and one replacement campus, $88.2 million for a new junior high, and $143.9 million in high school renovations and additions. An initial cost estimate of $395 million is offset by a $15 million savings from 2018 bond projects — which will be completed under budget. “District staff brought the recommendation to the committee to use those unspent funds to bring down the total cost,” McGuire said. The average age of Alvin ISD buildings is 32 years. view article arw

These Fort Worth school districts are most impacted by static state education funding

June 2708:15 AM

Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD Superintendent Jim Chadwell is in a position other school district leaders envy. A deluge of new houses are inbound. More residents. More students. More new schools. The downside, Chadwell said, is clear: state funding cannot keep up with his booming district. Growing districts are among the most impacted by the Texas Legislature not increasing public education funding in 2023, according to a Texas A&M University school finance expert. The others? Small districts in urban areas and rural school systems. view article arw

Understanding Texas’ School Safety Policies: Key Points

June 2608:41 AM

Following the deadliest school shooting in Texas, legislators have enacted stricter laws regarding gun control and school safety. The House Bill 3, passed late last year, mandates armed security guards on all campuses and increases mental health resources for students. In Texas, the Texas Education Agency, Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office, and the TxSSC are responsible for setting public school safety guidelines. These rules were updated after the 2022 tragedy in Uvalde, but experts are concerned that parents still lack detailed knowledge of school safety policies. Brian Clason, Texas State School Safety Center’s program manager for training and education, advises parents to establish relationships with school staff to understand safety protocols before emergencies occur. Here’s a guide for parents on handling emergencies such as active threats, natural disasters, or hazmat situations: view article arw

As more Texans struggle with housing costs, homeownership becoming less attainable

June 2608:30 AM

More Texas homeowners and renters than ever are struggling with high housing costs — and the state’s high home prices have potentially put the dream of owning a home out-of-reach for a growing number of families. That’s according to a new report from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, which also found that home prices and rents remain well above where they stood before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Texas housing market has cooled amid high interest rates after steep increases brought on by the state’s recent red-hot economic growth. So would-be homebuyers now need to make more money than ever before in order to buy a home in Texas’ major urban areas. The number of Texas homeowners and renters who struggle to keep a roof over their head also now sits at an all-time high. view article arw
