Texas schools still struggling with state armed guard mandate 1 year later

July 2908:30 AM

Generative AI requires massive amounts of power and water, and the aging U.S. grid can’t handle the load  Thanks to the artificial intelligence boom, new data centers are springing up as quickly as companies can build them. This has translated into huge demand for power to run and cool the servers inside. Now concerns are mounting about whether the U.S. can generate enough electricity for the widespread adoption of AI, and whether our aging grid will be able to handle the load.  “If we don’t start thinking about this power problem differently now, we’re never going to see this dream we have,” said Dipti Vachani, head of automotive at Arm. The chip company’s low-power processors have become increasingly popular with hyperscalers like Google, Microsoft , Oracle and Amazon — precisely because they can reduce power use by up to 15% in data centers. view article arw

National effort to connect rural students with colleges expands to Texas

July 2908:30 AM

Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin will get funds to visit more students in rural communities and small towns  Savannah Hunsucker didn’t have a college counselor to talk to at her rural high school outside Wichita, Kansas. She didn’t know if her grades were good enough to get into the academically rigorous universities she was interested in. Few recruiters visited her school and she couldn’t travel to the universities she was eyeing, so she leaned on Google searches to prepare her college applications.  “To have college [recruiters] come out and tell us about their school, even for schools that were local — that was pretty rare,” said Hunsucker, who is now a rising junior at Southern Methodist University. view article arw

Fort Worth ISD likely to start year without academic goals. Is that a big deal?

July 2908:25 AM

Last week, the Fort Worth Independent School District’s board voted down a plan that would have set academic goals and priorities for the next five years. Now, with the first day of school just weeks away, it seems likely that the district will start the year without a plan that outlines a coherent strategy for how schools function. The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas today sent letters to 51 independent school districts across the state, which appear to still be in violation of the Texas CROWN Act in their 2023-2024 dress and grooming codes. The letters demand that the districts update their policies to comply with the law. Tarrant school districts fear consequences of new appraisal tax plan

July 2609:00 AM

Leon Fisher is no stranger to the economic challenges faced by Crowley ISD parents. Around 70% of Crowley ISD students are considered economically disadvantaged. The school district’s chief financial officer said those challenges are why Crowley ISD offers an exemption allowing homeowners to reduce the taxable value of their primary residence by 10% and why it strives to keep taxes low as growth in the area explodes. But Fisher fears the sweeping changes approved by the Tarrant Appraisal District’s board of directors July 22 — also intended to provide property tax relief to residents — could have dire consequences for public education in his community. “Parents are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. They want the tax benefit from this proposal, but it’s really all about educating people on how it’s going to impact your school district,” Fisher said. “It’s going to have an adverse impact on your school district’s ability to both complete (bond) projects within the scheduled time and within the budgeted amounts that were initially identified for these bond projects.” view article arw

Texas schools are suing over A-F ratings. How might the lawsuit shake out?

July 2609:00 AM

What outcome are school districts hoping for as a result of the lawsuit? That everything stays how it was, said Jo Beth Jimerson, a Texas Christian University education professor. I don’t really think anything changes, because they already know that the standards are eventually raising,” she said. “So, the schools already have targets and benchmarks they’ve been trying to reach.”  Cracks may show in the relationship between schools and the TEA if districts don’t win the lawsuit, Jimerson said.  “There has now been a seed of distrust sown,” Jimerson said. “You’re going to tell me what those rules are; OK, we now know what the higher standards are; are you gonna change those a year from now? Now we’d have a situation with Lucy and Charlie Brown … Lucy’s pulling the ball out.”Lower ratings are widely expected under the revised formulas.  view article arw

James Morris, son of Gateway founder Robert Morris, resigns from church

July 2609:00 AM

A-F grades are coming to Texas schools regardless of the outcome of a lawsuit, according to an education expert.  Some districts are suing the Texas Education Agency to stop it from issuing grades under the newly revised accountability system.  The TEA revised formulas and cutoffs for letter grades as part of an update to the accountability system as required by state law. A-F ratings were introduced in 2017, and this year marks the first update.  What outcome are school districts hoping for as a result of the lawsuit? Humble ISD board ousts Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen

July 2608:30 AM

Superintendent Fagen can file an appeal with the Texas Education Agency, a motion that could take months to review. In a 4-3 vote, the Humble ISD Board of Trustees voted to oust Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen Tuesday night, potentially ending her eight-year reign as head of the district.  The Humble ISD board hired independent attorney Giana Ortiz, who suggested the district fire Kite, citing comments he made about coworkers' clothing and bodies. Kite later stepped down following the report's release and filed a lawsuit in June against trustee Robert Scarfo, where he alleges Scarfo sexually harassed him while he worked for the district, according to the Houston Landing. Additionally, Kite's suit argues other trustees on the school board corroborated his exit from Humble ISD. view article arw
