Carroll ISD Says Federal Civil Rights Investigation Lacks Evidence
Discrimination complaints could result in required diversity trainings, but the district currently says it will not negotiate with the federal Education Department. Carroll Independent School District has refused to negotiate with the U.S. Department of Education over civil rights complaints that could require the district to re-implement diversity trainings. The four students who lodged the complaints with the department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) have now graduated or are no longer a part of the Southlake district. The complaints allege that students at Carroll ISD are being discriminated on the basis of their race and “LGBTQ+” identity. The complaints cited alleged incidents where students used racial slurs and say that families at Carroll ISD must make a “cruel choice”—either submit to discrimination or leave the district’s great resources. Carroll ISD has now responded to the complaints, with the board president and the superintendent writing, “OCR has refused to provide us written findings to evaluate and will try to enforce any resolution even if found we did nothing wrong.” view article

Breakfasts and lunches are free for all La Porte ISD students in 2024-25
Breakfasts and lunches will be served at no cost to all La Porte ISD students during the 2024-25 school year. The district will operate the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program and will not require families to submit applications; every student will have automatic access, said School Nutrition Director Ralph Wilkins. “The elimination of meal applications will reduce the burden on families and will prevent negative meal account balances and make serving lines move faster,” Wilkins said. “This will also allow the La Porte ISD School Nutrition department to expand our focus on student-centered meal innovation and our local foods program.” La Porte ISD has been honored for five straight years by the Texas Department of Agriculture for serving such items as locally sourced produce, meat and bread. Though there are no longer any free or reduced-price meal applications, the district encourages families to complete a socioeconomic survey that will be released in August. This will help La Porte ISD maintain funding that directly benefits students, Wilkins said. "Offering free breakfasts and lunches for students not only ensures they receive delicious and nutritious meals, but it also provides much-needed relief to family budgets,” said Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson. “This initiative supports both the health of our children and the financial well-being of our community, and I am very pleased at the efforts of our School Nutrition Department to bring this program to fruition in La Porte ISD. -30- view article

DPS reinstates Texas Ranger fired for Uvalde shooting response
Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said he made the decision after the Uvalde district attorney found no criminal wrongdoing and asked that Ranger Chris Kindell be allowed to return to his job. The Texas Department of Public Safety has reinstated a Texas Ranger who the agency previously attempted to fire for failing to respond appropriately to the deadly Robb Elementary School shooting. DPS Director Steve McCraw said in a Friday letter to Christopher Ryan Kindell that Kindell could return to his former position now that the Texas Rangers had completed their criminal investigation of the shooting. No criminal charges were filed against any DPS officers. McCraw said that Uvalde County District Attorney Christina Mitchell, who convened a grand jury in January to investigate law enforcement’s delayed response to the May 2022 shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers, requested the reinstatement. Mitchell confirmed that she made that request, noting that rangers in Real County, Val Verde County and Maverick County had been covering Kindell’s territory while he was suspended. view article
