Southside ISD enhances campus safety measures for new school year
More than 6,000 students and 900 staff are headed back to school Monday for the first day of classes at Southside Independent School District. Campus Police Chief Don Berger feels pretty confident about the safety plan the district has in place. Berger said district police officers and security officers have been training and staying up to date on requirements. Parents can expect to see an officer at every campus during pick up and drop off.

Carroll ISD parent calls district’s decision to end talks over discrimination claims ‘hurtful’
The mother of a student involved in claims of civil rights violations in Carroll ISD says the district’s decision to end negotiations with federal investigators is disappointing. Carroll leaders last week declared an impasse in negotiations with officials from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, saying in a letter to OCR attorneys that the district hasn’t received necessary information to negotiate a resolution.

Former Mansfield ISD teacher gets life in prison for 2023 shooting, assault of his family
A former Mansfield ISD teacher was sentenced to life in prison by a jury in the 2023 shooting that seriously injured his son and stepdaughter and the assault of his wife, the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office said in a post Friday. On May 16, 2023, 53-year-old Thomas Boykin was charged with three counts of aggravated assault/family violence with serious bodily injury, according to police records.

The $43 million infusion the Port Arthur Independent School District received in federal COVID-19 pandemic relief funds accomplished more than Phyllis Geans could have ever imagined. The money allowed the district to upgrade antiquated heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Teachers earned retention stipends at a time when many were leaving the profession. Students received new band instruments. An ambitious summer program taught them about photography, robots and skydiving.“We were excited, really excited, because we started thinking about things that we knew were almost impossible,” said Geans, Port Arthur ISD’s assistant superintendent of operations. “It was unreal.”

Rising costs and stagnant state funds pushed this West Texas school district to the financial brink
The Ector County school district boosted student learning but now faces financial uncertainty. It closed schools and cut costs to stay afloat, but it won’t slash teacher jobs. When Superintendent Scott Muri joined Ector County Independent School District, students scored poorly on the state’s standardized test. The state’s school rating system gave the district a D the year before he was hired. Muri, a veteran school administrator with a reputation for running high-performing districts, said fixing Ector County ISD needed to start with teachers. The district was 350 teachers short. He used funds from a historic financial boost to public education approved by Texas lawmakers in 2019 to introduce salary increases, hire more teachers and train them. His plan worked. Over the next five years, students improved their grades. By 2022, the district’s rating had gone up to a B. But the same windfall that financed his strategy has not kept up with inflation, an issue he and other educators across the state say has become impossible to ignore. Ector County ISD faces a $12 million deficit in its budget for the 2024-25 school year.

Houston ISD board votes unanimously to place $4.4 billion bond package on November ballot
Houston voters will decide the fate of a $4.4 billion bond proposal for the city's much-maligned school district after its state-appointed board of managers elected Thursday to place the measure on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Houston ISD's board members voted unanimously to sign off on the bond package, which is the largest in Texas history and the first for the district since 2012. That it's been more than a decade since HISD's last bond was a significant factor in supporting the plan, according to Rolando Martinez, who was the lone manager to speak about the proposal before the vote.

Cy-Fair ISD is considering offering Bible-focused electives. How popular are such courses?
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is considering adding two new courses to the district’s slate of electives, including the state-approved “Literature and the Bible” and “Western Civilization and the Bible.” Superintendent Douglas Killian said in Thursday’s agenda review meeting that he hopes the courses will be offered in the 2025-2026 school year, to widen the array of electives for the northwestern Harris County district’s 118,000 students.

‘We must adjust our staffing levels’: Houston ISD to start school year with 748 fewer teachers than last year
The first day of school at Houston Independent School District, the largest school district in Texas, will begin with fewer teachers than last school year, according to state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles. In a weekly newsletter to parents and staff, Miles said in the 2023-2024 school year, the district started with 11,388 teachers. This year, the district will begin its school year with 10,640. That’s a difference of 748 teachers.

Former teacher to sue Klein ISD, claims she was fired after reporting human trafficking concerns
A former Klein ISD teacher has come forward as the "whistleblower" who alerted officials to another educator's involvement in a sex trafficking ring. In a Thursday news conference, Desma Darden revealed herself as the complainant. Denison ISD talks elementary school construction, new clear bag policy
Denison’s first day of school is Tuesday, and superintendent David Kirkbride said the district is ready to rock and roll.

There were 121 schools considered "D" or "F" in the 2022-23 school year, but after a year of Miles' leadership, there were just 41 schools with those low ratings, according to HISD's own calculations. There were 93 "A" and "B" rated schools in the 2022-23 school year, which is up to 170 schools with "A" and "B" ratings now.

A security guard who worked at an elementary school in Carlisle Independent School District is in jail, accused of a sex crime involving a child. Keith Russell McFarland was arrested Monday and charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact, a felony. Carlisle ISD is located in East Texas near Henderson in Rusk County.

Tyler ISD school board denounces Biden Administration’s Title IX changes
In a decisive move that has sparked concern among the LGBTQ+ community in Tyler, the Tyler ISD school board formally denounced changes to Title IX regulations implemented by the Biden administration at the trustees' June 17 meeting. “Part of the new regulatory requirements, handed down from the executive branch, expanded the definition of sex to include an individual's self-professed gender identity,” said Wade Washmon, president of Tyler ISD board of trustees. “This was the root cause of our denouncement of the changes to Title IX, (which was) made by executive order without the consent of representatives of the governed.”
