Questions remain in the death of HISD middle school student

August 1908:30 AM

Now, the Houston Federation of Teachers is claiming staff members at Marshall Middle School told the union that the school's defibrillator wasn't working when the 8th grader collapsed. "The teachers at the campus feel that it could have made a difference," Houston Federation of Teachers Corina Ortiz told ABC 13 News. "The time lost trying to find the backup model, waiting for EMS to get there." Ortiz said a third-party contractor is supposed to service the device once a year, but it is unclear if that happened.  The union's president, Jackie Anderson added, “According to numerous reports from our members, the defibrillator present at the time was not in working condition. I will continue to investigate this matter and promptly share any new information with the community. I believe that the healing process begins with understanding what went wrong and then taking steps to ensure that we prioritize the best interests of our children. Unfortunately, this is not something we have seen from this administration so far.” view article arw

Austin school district seeks to reverse enrollment decline

August 1908:30 AM

On a sweltering August afternoon, members of the Austin school district family resource team stride through the parking lot of a South Austin apartment complex. ● Gloria Vera-Bedolla, wearing a bright red T-shirt, reaches into her drawstring bag for flyers explaining the district’s enrollment process. At one apartment door, no one answers, and she pins the flyer to a clip outside the door. ● At another door, Star Castillo invites Vera-Bedolla, a family engagement coordinator, to come in out of the heat and explain how to enroll her daughter for kindergarten. view article arw

Thanking teachers as school year starts

August 1908:30 AM

With the start of the new school year, I want to wish our students continued success as they embark on another year of learning, opportunity and lifelong memories. As students pour into the hallways and classrooms of schools across the state, I also want to acknowledge and sincerely thank the teachers, faculty and administrators who have worked tirelessly to prepare for the new school year. These men and women play such a critical role in shaping our children’s future, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their dedicated service. With that, we’ll dive back into our examination of House interim charges. view article arw

HISD convinced the school board to vote for a $4.4B school bond. Will voters say yes in November?

August 1908:30 AM

Voters can cast their ballots Nov. 5 on a historic $4.4 billion bond, the first brought to voters by Houston ISD in 12 years after the appointed Board of Managers unanimously approved the measure Thursday.   HISD's state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles unveiled the massive bond measure in May, which he says will address schools with "poor facilities and learning conditions" that will negatively impact student academic performance if left unaddressed. If voters approve it, the bond would be the largest in state history.  The effort has faced pushback from dozens of HISD community members at public meetings who have adopted “No trust. No bond,” as a rallying cry to indicate that they will be voting no after losing faith in the district’s leaders since the Texas Education Agency replaced the elected board members and superintendent with appointees in June 2023. view article arw

Houston ISD board presses superintendent about test score declines among some disadvantaged students

August 1908:25 AM

Early returns show the New Education System (NES) in Houston ISD is helping to improve standardized test scores. The district's board of managers wants the rest of the school system to have the same impact, particularly as it pertains to students who are disadvantaged. Implementing and expanding his NES model has been a focus of second-year Superintendent Mike Miles, who along with the nine board members was installed by the Texas Education Agency because Wheatley High School received a string of failing accountability ratings from the state. Those ratings are tied largely to performance on standardized tests, so raising scores is a key charge for district leadership. view article arw

Texas jurors are deciding if a student’s parents are liable in a deadly 2018 school shooting

August 1906:56 AM

A Texas jury has begun deliberating whether the parents of a former student accused of killing 10 people in a 2018 school shooting near Houston bear responsibility for what happened -DALLAS (AP) — An attorney for the parents of a Texas student accused of killing 10 people in a 2018 school shooting near Houston told trial jurors Friday that they didn't know their son would have a psychotic breakdown. Lawyers for the victims say Dimitrios Pagourtzis gave his parents many signs that he needed help.  The victims' lawsuit seeks to hold Pagourtzis and his parents, Antonios Pagourtzis and Rose Marie Kosmetatos, financially liable for the shooting at Santa Fe High School on May 18, 2018. They are pursuing at least $1 million in damages.  The jury was given the case just before 5 p.m. and was set to resume deliberating Monday morning.  Victims’ attorneys say the parents failed to provide necessary support for their son’s mental health and didn’t do enough to prevent him from accessing their guns.  “It was their son, under their roof, with their guns who went and committed this mass shooting,” Clint McGuire, representing some of the victims, told jurors during closing statements in the Galveston courtroom.  Authorities say Pagourtzis fatally shot eight students and two teachers. He was 17 years old at the time. view article arw

Austin school district Chief Financial Officer Eduardo Ramos was reinstated from administrative leave Thursday after the Williamson County District Attorney's Office told school district officials it won't prosecute insurance fraud charges police brought against Ramos for a non-school related matter, according to a district announcement. Ramos, 51, was placed on paid administrative leave July 31 after he'd been arrested that same day on a Round Rock Police Department warrant for felony insurance fraud charges. Ramos told the American-Statesman after his arrest that he would trust the judicial process and asked people not to rush to judgment until the matter was settled. "I trusted the process," Ramos said. "Now it's time for me to move forward and continue to serve public education in whatever capacity I am called to serve next." Before his July 31 arrest, Ramos had announced that he planned to leave the district to pursue another job opportunity and his last day with the Austin district is Friday. The district noted in its Thursday statement that Ramos will depart the district in good standing. Ramos has worked for the Austin district for three years. view article arw
