Conroe ISD to add teachers, bridge $12M shortfall
Editor's note: The print version of the story makes a reference to a raise in 2024-25, but a raise was only given in 2023-24 in Conroe ISD. Conroe ISD is looking to cover increasing costs and staffing needs in the 2024-25 fiscal year despite a lack of increased state funding. The Texas Legislature designated $4 billion for public education funding in the 88th legislative session in 2023, but measures to provide that funding to schools failed to pass. CISD expects an $11.9 million budget shortfall in 2024-25. Officials said the district can cover the gap this year, but planning for the 2025-26 fiscal year may require other approaches. “December, January is when those decisions [to make cuts] are going to have to be made,” Superintendent Curtis Null said. view article

Of that amount, 66.92 cents will be used for maintenance and operations, while 22.50 cents is designated for interest and sinking. The tax rate increase was due to the district’s voter-approved $20 million bond package in May. view article

Rep. Gooden Demands Google Answer for Harris Campaign’s Manipulation of Search Engine Results
U.S. Rep. Lance Gooden demanded answers in a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai about the Kamala Harris campaign’s use of Google search ads to manipulate news headlines. According to Gooden (TX-5), Google is allowing the Kamala Harris campaign to buy ads that “mislead readers by linking to news stories with altered headlines that appear favorable to the vice president.” Without consent from the companies involved, this “strategy” creates the impression that particular media outlets endorse Harris. Calling Google’s actions “yet another disturbing example of election interference by the world’s largest search engine,” Gooden sees the manipulation of news headlines as “a deliberate attempt to mislead voters by falsely suggesting endorsements from major news publications.” view article
Texas jury finds school shooter’s parents not liable for violence
A Galveston, Texas, jury on Monday found the parents of a teenager who shot and killed 10 classmates at Santa Fe High School in 2018 not liable for the violence, ending an unusual civil trial. Family members of the shooting victims and survivors accused Antonios Pagourtzis and Rose Kosmetatos of being negligent in allowing their son, Dimitrios, to obtain weapons from their home and for not warning school officials or police about his deteriorating mental state. The jury did decide that Dimitrios Pagourtzis and Lucky Gunner, the company that sold him the ammunition used in the shooting even though he was too young to buy it, were liable for the deaths and injuries, and awarded $330 million in damages. Lucky Gunner last year reached a settlement with families that sought to exclude it from having to make any more payments. Jake Felde, Lucky Gunner's CEO, said in a written statement that his company "isn't responsible for paying any monetary damages awarded by the jury" as it already reached a separate settlement for the shooting and was not a party to the Texas trial. view article

HISD's maintenance of automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, has been called into question following the death last Wednesday of Landon Payton. Facing $99M budget deficit, Austin ISD calls tax rate election. Here’s what it means.
The Austin school board has called a Nov. 5 election to ask voters to raise the property tax rate by 9.1 cents to fund a $17.3 million compensation package for staff members and offset the district’s staggering $99 million deficit. The district is asking voters to approve the increase to raise an additional $41 million for its $1.2 billion budget at a time when officials are contemplating $78 million in cuts over the next two years. Several other local districts, such as Manor, are calling for similar voter-authorized tax rate elections this year, as schools across the state grapple with budget woes and consider how to slash spending. view article

How AISD is keeping students safe amid an excessive heat warning
When Austin students kick off the new school year Tuesday, they'll be returning to class amid an excessive heat warning as the National Weather Service forecasts the daily high temperature will be 106. In the heart of Texas, where heat persists, the Austin school district is prepped and ready. While taking part in the usual before-school trainings, health room and athletics staff members are being educated on how to recognize heat illnesses and how to respond. This training is in addition to the district’s online hot weather guidelines, which establish what activities and precautions are necessary for athletics, fine arts and recess/PE, depending on the temperature. view article
Texas religion professor takes on state’s Christian influenced lesson plans
David Brockman, a religion professor at TCU, finds “problems of balance, accuracy and neutrality” in the TEA's proposed curriculum for elementary classrooms. For the past decade, David Brockman, a 66-year-old Episcopalian in Fort Worth, has been a "strong supporter" of teaching religion in Texas public schools. As a nonresident scholar at Rice University's Baker Institute and an adjunct professor at Texas Christian University, where he teaches religion, Brockman believes students in private and public systems would benefit from learning about Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism and would better connect with neighbors across an increasingly diverse state. The way he sees it, public school educators who identify with a range of political backgrounds already teach subjects like history and government. Why couldn't they be trained to take on the world's religions in classrooms? This week, Brockman and the Austin-based watchdog group Texas Freedom Network released a 23-page report titled, "Turning Texas Public Schools into Sunday Schools?" which dissected the Texas Education Agency's (TEA) newly proposed "Open Education Resources" curriculum to include religion lessons for K-5 Reading and Language Arts lessons. Essentially, Brockman concluded that the TEA, the state branch responsible for public education, "missed an opportunity" in drafting the Christian-heavy curriculum that he deemed riddled with misleading statements and errors. view article
