Dallas ISD plans to emphasize writing and math to help turn around two dozen failing schools. The district was one of just three statewide to release its projected school grades last week, along with Houston and Garland ISDs. Irving offered a grade for the district but not individual campuses. Dallas’s estimated ratings show 24 “F” campuses, most of them elementary schools. view article

Houston ISD parents outraged over lack of AC and ‘scripted’ emails
Principals dealing with HVAC issues have been forced to send out a form email message to parents with no specific details related to their campus. As a precaution, T.H. Rogers Elementary School was shut down on Wednesday due to an HVAC system outage. Other schools are also dealing with little to no AC. Lanier Middle School is experiencing cooling issues, and many parents are posting messages in an HISD parent Facebook group that their kid's classrooms are not cool enough. Wisdom High School and Crockett Elementary School have also reported issues with broken HVAC systems. As a precaution, T.H. In Texas, violating campaign ethics laws rarely yields repercussions. The attorney general’s office is to blame.
The number of fines for breaking state campaign ethics laws has exploded in recent years as Ken Paxton’s office rarely pursues stricter enforcement. n 1989, Bo Pilgrim, an East Texas chicken plant magnate, strolled the floor of the Texas Senate and dispensed $10,000 checks to nine members in an effort to stop a worker’s compensation bill from passing. The scandal, dubbed “Chickengate,” was shocking but legal. But the chicken man’s brazenness — what he called campaign contributions, many Texans saw as bribes — ruffled enough feathers to usher in a rare era of good government reforms. Lawmakers would soon pass laws prohibiting themselves from accepting donations inside the Capitol and creating the Texas Ethics Commission, an independent body with investigative power, that would enforce the state’s campaign finance laws. view article
Lewisville ISD outperforms state average in 2024 STAAR scores
This was the second year of a redesigned STAAR, which aimed to more closely align with how students are taught in the classroom. The new assessment is administered online. Students who take the test are measured using four performance levels: Did not meet grade level: a student does not show a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills, and is unlikely to succeed in the next grade level without significant academic intervention Approaches grade level: a student has some gaps in assessed knowledge and skills and is likely to succeed in the next grade level with targeted academic intervention (This score and all levels above constitute passing scores) Meets grade level: students are highly likely to succeed in the next grade level and demonstrates a strong understanding of the material Masters grade level: a student is skilled in the subject area and mastered the course material view article

Long COVID Looks Different in Kids
Adults with Long COVID can experience a slew of different symptoms, but some are more common than others. Intense fatigue, crashes after mental or physical effort, brain fog, shortness of breath or coughing that won’t go away, and the loss of smell or taste are some of Long COVID’s hallmarks. For kids, however, it’s another story. New research, published Aug. 21 in JAMA, finds that Long COVID symptoms can look different among children compared to adults—and even among kids of different age groups. “Most of what we know about Long COVID, we know from studies of adults,” says Dr. Rachel Gross, an associate professor of pediatrics at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and co-lead author of the new study, which is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health's RECOVER research initiative. “This is one of the largest and first studies to try to characterize the prolonged symptoms that are experienced by children and to try to understand how they may differ between different age groups.” view article
Houston ISD’s $4.4 billion bond proposal gains strong support from voters, Kinder survey shows
As Houston ISD prepares for a pivotal vote this November on a $4.4 billion bond proposal, a new survey conducted by Rice University's Kinder Institute for Urban Research reveals significant backing from Houston residents. The survey found that about 75% of about 4,500 HISD residents were in favor of the bond, so long as it doesn’t raise property taxes by more than $1 per year. About 58% said they’d support the bond if it increased property taxes by about $25 per year. On the far end of the spectrum, only 17% of HISD residents said they’d support the bond if property taxes increased by more than $200 per year. view article

Local Democrats call for audits of Houston ISD bond proposal, charter school network founded by Mike Miles
A group of Democratic state lawmakers from Houston are calling for Texas' attorney general to conduct financial audits of Houston ISD's $4.4 billion bond proposal as well as the charter school network founded by the district's state-appointed superintendent. The elected officials' concerns stem from a May report by Spectrum News about Colorado-based Third Future Schools, where Mike Miles served as CEO before leading Houston's school district. The cable TV news outlet claimed the charter network violated Texas law by sending millions in taxpayer money from its school in Odessa to a Colorado campus that needed financial assistance. view article

Katy ISD prioritizes retaining staff while facing $25.42M shortfall
Katy ISD is facing a potential $25.42 million shortfall in its general fund for fiscal year 2024-25, a challenge district officials said was primarily caused by inflation and the state not increasing public school funding during the last legislative session. This shortfall rose in May when trustees approved roughly $22 million to increase teacher and staff pay 3% from the midpoint of their respective salaries, KISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski said. Trustees are set to approve the proposed budget Aug. 26, using the district’s reserve funds to offset costs. “This was the most difficult budget that our teams have had to prepare in the past six years that I’ve served as superintendent,” he said. Public education advocates and local district leaders are requesting an increase in school funding when lawmakers meet for the 89th Texas Legislature, which begins Jan. 14. view article
Frisco ISD voters to see $1.08B bond, tax rate on November ballot
Frisco ISD voters can expect a $1.08 billion bond package as well as a tax rate election on the November ballot. Frisco ISD board members placed the bond package and tax rate election on the ballot for the Nov. 5 general election during an Aug. 19 meeting. Approving the tax rate and calling the tax rate election was approved by trustees in 5-2 votes, with Stephanie Elad and Marvin Lowe casting dissenting votes. Calling a bond election was approved in a 6-1 vote, with Elad voting against approval. Elad cited concerns for how the bond propositions were packaged. She would have rather seen the campus refresh and Staley Middle School construction be separated from the rest of Proposition A. “Regardless of where we are Nov. 5, it is my hope this district continues to look at measures to reduce spending, get to a balanced budget and lower the tax burden on our community,” she said. If voters approve all the bond propositions, the district's interest and sinking tax rate—which is used for bonds and debt services—would not increase from its existing rate of $0.27. view article
