Greg Abbott in December 2022 and became a Texas State University adjunct professor in 2023, emailed his students and hundreds of others from his university account asking them to vote for him, according to screenshots and copies of the emails obtained by the American-Statesman. Chevo Pastrano, an attorney retained by Alicia Key, who is challenging Neidhardt in the race, emailed Texas State University President Kelly Damphousse to accuse the incumbent of "electioneering" with university resources, a potential state law violation. Pastrano also alerted the university police and Hays County district attorney's office. view article

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals accused state Rep. Jeff Leach of privately attempting to sway a judge on the state's highest criminal court to reconsider their vote in a previous decision and grant death row inmate Robert Roberson a new trial, a "clear violation" of the state ethics code for attorneys, according to a letter the court sent Friday that Leach confirmed Monday. Leach, a Republican from Plano who is an attorney, texted a judge on the Criminal Appeals Court: "One Judge. That's all that's needed to simply say... there are too many questions and too many holes and too much uncertainty... and Robert Roberson deserves a new trial," according to the court's letter. view article
Texas teens can now see which state universities would automatically accept them
Texas high school students can now see which of the state’s public universities would accept them before they submit college applications, state leaders announced Oct. 11. Students who submit academic information—like their grade point average, class rank and standardized test scores—to the state’s new Direct Admissions portal will receive a list of where they qualify for automatic acceptance, according to a news release. Thirty-one of Texas’ 37 public universities participate in the program. Students can begin using Direct Admissions at the end of their junior year of high school. Once a student receives their admissions list, they must still submit an application to verify their information and help schools determine if they qualify for scholarships. If students do not qualify for direct admission at a specific university, they can still go through the traditional application process, according to the release. Students can submit a single application to Texas institutions through ApplyTexas. view article

As many as 400 people might have illegally obtained a teacher certification in Texas since 2020 through the cheating ring, which netted the organizers about $1 million, prosecutors said. view article

Dustin Burrows: Politics at play in timing, threat of school closings in Lubbock, state
In gangster movies, we’re all familiar with shady characters saying, “It’s a nice place you’ve got here. It would be a shame if something should happen to it.” We accept it when we see that on the screen because it advances the plot. However, when it happens in real life, and our children’s education is threatened, we owe it to our kids to push back. A scan of newspaper headlines in other Texas cities shows that school boards across the state (and nation) are talking about closing schools. Some districts began this conversation many months ago with a sober tone based upon the numbers. Others seemingly timed their announcements to coincide with early voting to stoke outrage that could affect choices on individual ballots. view article
