A new law gives parents more power over a child’s actions on social media, but only if the parent knows about the account. Parents of Texas children under 18 can now monitor and restrict their child’s activity on digital platforms including Facebook and Instagram — but only if they know their child uses the service.Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, rolled out parental control features in Texas last week to comply with House Bill 18, the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment Act, which went into effect Sept. 1. Why Austin ISD is required to create $4M summer special education programs for students
The Austin school district will have to create a $4 million fund and set up a summer program for students who were denied timely special education evaluations and other services, as part of a settlement agreement with Disability Rights Texas, a nonprofit that sued the district in 2021 over the overdue evaluations. The school district will also have to clear its backlog of overdue special education evaluations by the end of 2024, grant some students out-of-district evaluations without objection and pay Disability Rights Texas $75,000 in legal fees, according to documents released by the U.S. Western District Court of Texas this week. The settlement wraps up a case filed at the height of the district’s challenges with a chronic pile of past due requests to evaluate students for special education services as well as complaints about the delivery of those services. The Austin district is under a state-appointed monitor to oversee the district's efforts to eliminate the yearslong backlog and improve the delivery of special education services, as part of a September 2023 agreement with the Texas Education Agency. view article

Dallas ISD and Garland ISD trustees: This is why we released our accountability ratings
As Texas students were returning to classrooms last month, we school board trustees were anxiously awaiting the Texas Education Agency release of A-F accountability ratings. We were disappointed when the publication of the letter grades for our districts and campuses was halted by another lawsuit. It’s not because we were looking forward to showing off or competing with other districts. As board presidents for two of the largest public school districts in Texas, we are committed to transparency. In order to make the best decisions for the children we serve, it’s important we look clearly and honestly at education outcomes, even — especially — when data reveals we still have work to do. view article

H-E-B launches 2025 search for Texas’ top educators
A Texas lawmaker is proposing a later start to the school year, saying the change will save energy and money, help protect the power grid, and improve life for school kids. State Rep. Jared Patterson (R–Frisco) suggested students should return to school in September instead of August to avoid having to cool campus buildings during the hottest weeks of summer when power demand and prices are high. “I think our parents had it right starting school after Labor Day,” Patterson said last week on Inside Texas Politics. “We cool down some of the largest buildings in most communities across the state of Texas during the hottest month of the year, which costs more money and puts more of a strain on the grid,” he explained.
