Mesquite ISD expands free meals for students in the upcoming school year
All Mesquite ISD students will continue to receive free nutritious breakfast and lunch for the 2024-25 school year. No application will be required, according to the school district. Items outside the standard meal, such as chips, bottled water and cookies, will be available for purchase. North TX man gets 120 years in prison in child pornography, child molestation case
A North Texas man convicted of child pornography and recording himself molest a toddler was sentenced on Thursday to 120 years in prison, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton announced in a news release. Leslie Michael Alt, 40, of Forney, was indicted in Sept. 2022 and pleaded guilty a year later to two counts of production of child pornography and three counts of transportation of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Ada Brown gave him his sentence on Thursday. Alt admitted to using concealed cameras to record sexually explicit videos of two preteen girls, according to court documents. view article
Denton ISD selects first woman as sole finalist for superintendent
The Denton Independent School District Board of Trustees named Susannah O’ Bara, who has a doctorate of education, sole finalist for superintendent. The Trustees are expected to officially appoint her after waiting the state-required 21 days, making O’Bara the first female superintendent in Denton ISD’s 142-year history. If O’Bara is officially named superintendent, she will oversee operations of the entire district, according to Reece Waddell, communications coordinator of Denton ISD and former Editor-in-Chief of the North Texas Daily. view article
Richards ISD Names Lone Finalist
At a specially called meeting on Thursday, July 11th, the Richards ISD Board of Trustees unanimously selected Mr. Michael Smith, currently the Chief Operations Officer in West Hardin ISD, as the lone finalist for Superintendent. Mr. Smith’s wide experience in all facets of education set him apart from the many applicants vying for the position. He began his career in education as a special education instructional aide, taught at the secondary level, served as assistant principal and principal at the secondary level. He is married and has two sons in college. Mr. Smith is currently working on his Doctorate through Stephen F. Austin University. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Lamar University. Texas state law requires school districts to implement a 21-day waiting period before an official contract is offered. The board is expected to vote on Mr. Smith’s contract at a meeting scheduled for August 1st. The Richards ISD board was assisted in the search by the law firm of Leon | Alcala. view article
East Central ISD working to update cell phone guidelines for students
The debate over cell phones in school is heating up in San Antonio. Right now, a pair of local districts are looking to update their policies and guidelines in hopes of avoiding distractions in the classroom and improving student learning. On Thursday, a school board committee with Northside ISD discussed coming up with a district-wide cell phone policy, since their guidelines currently vary from campus to campus. A school district in El Paso is now on the highway to a greener future, after it unveiled its new fleet of electric school buses on Friday. The Socorro Independent School District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday to celebrate 25 new electric school buses and charging stations that will hit the road during the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Katy ISD trustees approve lump sum pay for teachers
Katy ISD teachers will receive a one-time payment based on their years of service after board of trustees approved the measure in a special meeting July 16. The lump sum payment, which will be given to teachers in five-year intervals, is meant to encourage retention and attract tenured teachers. On Thursday, the Sulphur Springs ISD Board of Trustees voted to raise staff pay, and take a new pay scale for all employees, during a special called board meeting. Canyon ISD rejects price increase to school lunches, will seek waiver
Pushing back against the recommendation to raise school meal prices, the Canyon Independent School District voted unanimously to forgo the state’s recommended increase and to seek a waiver for raising prices for the school year. The proposed price increase would have raised all meal prices by 10 cents across the board. All elementary lunches would have gone from $2.60 to $2.70, and secondary lunches from $2.80 to $2.90. Breakfast would have increased from $1.80 to $1.90 for both secondary and elementary students. No changes would have been made to the free or reduced lunch program. This price adjustment was to be done in accordance with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s guidance and federal standards. view article
Citing mental health, Amarillo ISD looks at limiting students’ cell phone use
At Monday’s Amarillo Independent School District meeting, the school board was presented with a comprehensive plan outlining cell phone use during the instructional day at district high schools. Jay Barrett, the principal of AmTech Career Academy, and other school district leadership spoke about the need for a standard policy to deal with the disruptions to learning that teachers have observed in the classroom. Karnack ISD, Jefferson ISD renew high school agreement
Both the Karnack ISD and Jefferson ISD Board of Trustees recently extended an agreement between the districts to allow Jefferson to continue providing an education to Karnack students in grades 9-12. At the regularly held meeting for the Jefferson ISD Board of Trustees on July 9, Jefferson Superintendent Michael Walker introduced the updated agreement, which was originally set to extend in the 2024-25 academic year. He stated that Karnack Superintendent Angela Fitzpatrick had approached him to determine if Jefferson would also provide transportation for students in grades 9-12 back to the Karnack pickup location. view article

Starting with the graduating class of 2028, which will begin high school this fall, Round Rock ISD students will be able to have a greater variety of courses count towards their rank in class. Trustees approved an update to the district's rank-in-class policy July 18, allowing for more courses to be factored into these calculations. Prior to this approval, only English, science, math, social studies and language courses were included in calculations for class rank. An Anson ISD employee and sports photographer has been arrested on child pornography charges. Daril Gonzales, 55, was taken into custody Wednesday for Possession or Promotion of Lewd Visual Material Depicting a Child. A press release states Gonzales was initially contacted after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children told police there had been lewd visual material of children on his devices. view article

Friendswood ISD sees K-8 literacy progress through assessments
