Lubbock ISD earns sixth TAEA District of Distinction Award
For the sixth year in a row, Lubbock ISD is a Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) District of Distinction for the 2023-2024 academic year. This honor places the district’s visual art programs in the top 1.3% of all visual art programming in Texas. Lubbock ISD is one of only 16 school districts to receive this accolade for six consecutive years, every year the award has been available. Local, Metroplex Parents Split Over Student Access to Cell Phones at School
Parents disagree over what limits—if any—are appropriate as more Texas school districts propose policies restricting students’ access to cell phones.Keller Independent School District is the latest to consider keeping kids off their phones during school hours. “The data is clear that cell phones and social media are addictive, contribute to mental health issues, and are a disruption to the learning environment. This policy will help address this issue by re-establishing a healthy, safe, and positive learning environment,” Board President Charles Randklev posted before last week’s school board meeting During the July 25 meeting, trustees previewed a policy requiring students to keep their cell phones turned off and stored in a bag or locker throughout the school day—including during class changes and lunch. Students can use their phones in emergencies or “for approved purposes.

Texas Secures Historic $1.4 Billion Settlement with Meta Over Privacy Violations
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced a landmark $1.4 billion settlement with Meta, formerly known as Facebook, after the company was accused of violating user privacy. In February 2022, Paxton sued Meta for capturing and using the biometric data of millions of Texans without properly obtaining their informed consent, in violation of Texas law. The company was accused of storing millions of biometric identifiers, defined by statute as “a retina or iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or record of hand or face geometry,” contained in photos and videos uploaded by users of the social media app. Paxton’s office noted that the settlement is the largest ever obtained from an action by a single state and the largest privacy settlement secured by an attorney general. In comparison, 40 states received a $390 million settlement from Google in 2022 over the tech giant’s location tracking practices.

Tuesday, the Lufkin ISD school board approved low-attendance waivers for the upcoming school year. These waivers are requested when a school’s average attendance drops below 80%.

Two North Texas seniors painted pro-Trump parking spaces, now the school district is asking them to paint over them
At least two students at Keller High School were asked to re-paint their senior parking spaces after administrators reviewed them and saw that they had rendered a pro-Trump mural and messaging for the former president and current GOP presidential nominee. This is the time of year when seniors within Keller ISD can cough up nearly $200 for a reserved space, which they're allowed to paint and park in for the upcoming school year.

Land, jobs drive real estate in Northwest ISD
An abundance of available space in Northwest ISD has housing developers turning dirt to create communities with a variety of housing types and amenities. Within NISD, enrollment has increased 27% in the past five years, said Bob Templeton with Zonda Education. Experts say the number of homes being built in the district will make it one of the highest populated in Region 11, an area covering 10 counties in North Texas.

Pottsboro ISD is getting a full-time security guard for the upcoming school year. In a recent board meeting, Cardinal Protection presented the district with a $59,000 check. The group set out to raise money for additional security measures at Pottsboro ISD more than a year ago. The donated funds will be used to hire one full-time person to cover the elementary and middle school campus.

Spring Branch ISD’s elementary school closure sparks concern over impact on disadvantaged students
Spring Branch ISD trustees voted on June 17 to close Spring Shadows Elementary within two weeks of the vote, citing budget cuts and teacher vacancies. This year, the district closed several schools and programs in the area due to a $35 million budget reduction. Former Spring Shadows teacher Roderick Huery said SBISD focused these changes in the schools with mostly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, some of who identify as homeless, according to the school website.

Dallas ISD Construction Services internship builds their students from the ground up
The school buildings that make up Dallas ISD all started from a design plan, and this summer students learned all about that process by working with the Construction Services Department. “This is our second year having interns in our program,” said Nikki Grant, executive assistant at Construction Services. “Our executive director, Michael Garcia, and chief of construction, Brent Alfred, were contacted by Micheal Gange and I worked to arrange the program. Perryton ISD’s school board adopted guidelines for cell phone use in the upcoming school year for all students, from elementary to high school. These guidelines will start in the elementary school, where phones and smart watches will have to remain off and in students’ backpacks for the entire day.

Arrested Roscoe ISD School Board Member Censured
A Roscoe ISD school board member was arrested in Nolan County on July 19th. 55-year-old Allen Richburg was arrested for one count of assault on a family member by impeding breath. At a special school board meeting on Monday night, board members voted to censure Richburg.

Winona ISD again to provide school supplies for all students
Winona ISD trustees again have approved purchasing school supplies for all the district's students. It's the second year in a row the district will buy supplies. "We understand the challenges that families face at the beginning of each school year," said Damenion Miller, Winona ISD superintendent. "By providing school supplies for our students, we hope to ease some of that burden and allow families to focus on preparing their children for a successful academic year."

Fort Worth ISD launches new program in the fight against hunger
Schools have helped in the fight against hunger and now Fort Worth Independent School District is launching a new free dinner program.
The district is partnering with food service company Sodexo to launch the program for the 2024-2025 school year.
"Our partnership with Sodexo embodies the spirit of collaboration with the goal of creating a thriving learning environment," Executive Director of Child Nutrition Services Pamela Watson said.

TexasISD.com was the brainchild of Joe F. Smith. Joe retired early from a successful career as Superintendent of Schools for Hudson ISD, deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Due to a long battle with Post-Polio Syndrome the doctor made him hang it up and rest for six months.
