Parents disagree over what limits—if any—are appropriate as more Texas school districts propose policies restricting students’ access to cell phones.Keller Independent School District is the latest to consider keeping kids off their phones during school hours.  “The data is clear that cell phones and social media are addictive, contribute to mental health issues, and are a disruption to the learning environment. Texas Secures Historic $1.4 Billion Settlement with Meta Over Privacy Violations

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced a landmark $1.4 billion settlement with Meta, formerly known as Facebook, after the company was accused of violating user privacy. In February 2022, Paxton sued Meta for capturing and using the biometric data of millions of Texans without properly obtaining their informed consent, in violation of Texas law. The company was accused of storing millions of biometric identifiers, defined by statute as “a retina or iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or record of hand or face geometry,” contained in photos and videos uploaded by users of the social media app. Paxton’s office noted that the settlement is the largest ever obtained from an action by a single state and the largest privacy settlement secured by an attorney general. In comparison, 40 states received a $390 million settlement from Google in 2022 over the tech giant’s location tracking practices. view article  arw

Perryton ISD implements new district-wide cell phone policy

Perryton ISD’s school board adopted guidelines for cell phone use in the upcoming school year for all students, from elementary to high school. These guidelines will start in the elementary school, where phones and smart watches will have to remain off and in students’ backpacks for the entire day. view article  arw

Arrested Roscoe ISD School Board Member Censured

A Roscoe ISD school board member was arrested in Nolan County on July 19th. 55-year-old Allen Richburg was arrested for one count of assault on a family member by impeding breath. At a special school board meeting on Monday night, board members voted to censure Richburg. view article  arw

Winona ISD again to provide school supplies for all students

Winona ISD trustees again have approved purchasing school supplies for all the district's students. It's the second year in a row the district will buy supplies. "We understand the challenges that families face at the beginning of each school year," said Damenion Miller, Winona ISD superintendent. "By providing school supplies for our students, we hope to ease some of that burden and allow families to focus on preparing their children for a successful academic year." view article  arw

Fort Worth ISD launches new program in the fight against hunger

Schools have helped in the fight against hunger and now Fort Worth Independent School District is launching a new free dinner program. The district is partnering with food service company Sodexo to launch the program for the 2024-2025 school year.
