The Office of Civil Rights launched an investigation into Wall ISD in late July regarding an instance of Title IX discrimination, according to public records. The OCR’s list of pending cases under investigation at elementary-secondary and post-secondary schools shows that an investigation into the infringement of Title IX was launched on July 22. An Austin ISD band teacher has been arrested for allegedly sending money to a student through CashApp and exchanging sexual images with them. 41-year-old Rodney Tyrone Childers has been charged with three counts of second-degree felony Indecency with a child by exposure, two counts of second-degree felony improper educator/student relationship, and one count of third-degree felony grooming of a child. view article
North Texas school district requiring students to lock cell phones in pouches
School districts across North Texas are cracking down on cell phone use inside the classroom. This week, Grapevine-Colleyville and Northwest approved stricter policies, but Grand Prairie ISD is going a step further than the typical ban. Parents petitioning against new Lumberton ISD stadium policy
The school year hasn't even started and a new Lumberton ISD policy is sparking enough controversy that parents are petitioning against it. There is a petition active on Change.org pushing for full access to the stadium for school pictures without the rental fee of $100 per hour for any photographer who wants to take photos at the stadium. Northwest ISD: 2024-2025 student cell phone usage standards set
Following a thorough review of district and school practices, Northwest ISD will implement device practices that prohibit the personal use of cellphones during class time. These practices will begin at the start of the 2024-2025 school year on Wednesday, August 14. Campus leaders met throughout the summer to align standards for cellphone usage in schools. These standards were developed to balance best practices for a strong learning environment with the need for cell phones during emergencies. ‘Create a distraction:’ Montgomery ISD students must put cell phones ‘away for the day’ under new policy
Montgomery ISD announced changes to the district’s cell phone policy following a board workshop. The district said students in Montgomery ISD will be allowed to have cell phones on campus. However, they are expected to be “away for the day” in backpacks, lockers, or vehicles and turned off. Even With Tax Increase, Austin ISD Will Need Significant Spending Cuts
School is still supposed to be out for summer but Austin ISD’s budget problems are so bad that the board of trustees is already back to work. The board’s July 25 meeting was billed as another discussion of the VATRE – the Voter Approved Tax Rate Election the trustees will almost certainly approve next week. The VATRE will ask Austin voters to say yes to a property tax increase which could bring an additional $40 million into the district next year. But even if that extra money comes, the district will still be $78 million in the red – and everyone already knows this. view article

Families sue Waxahachie ISD for alleged discrimination
Two families are suing Waxahachie ISD for alleged discrimination, accusing the district of punishing students of color far more harshly than their white counterparts. The lawsuit filed earlier this month in federal court outlines incidents of bullying that the students' parents say led to their children being disciplined, although they were the victims. In one alleged discriminatory incident, parent Leslie Jefferson said her African American daughter, identified as C.J., was bullied in the school cafeteria by a white student who insisted C.J. move to another table. About one-third of Houston ISD’s principal training program participants were hired as campus principals for the upcoming year, district records show. US Economic Development Administration awards Rockdale ISD with $5.25 million grant
The Rockdale Independent School District has been awarded a multi-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to renovate the College & Career Academy. The renovations will allow the College & Career Academy, which was once a hospital, to be the location for upper-level health science, manufacturing, and technology classes.
