Casino Lobby Boosts Abbott and Hegar With Major Contributions
A pro-casino PAC is contributing significantly to two of Texas’ top officials, Gov. Greg Abbott and Comptroller Glenn Hegar, ahead of the upcoming legislative session. According to new campaign finance filings, the Texas Sands PAC donated $150,000 to Abbott and $100,000 to Hegar during August and September. The PAC also made smaller donations, giving $15,000 to Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick and $5,000 to Democrat State Rep. Toni Rose. These contributions are part of a broader strategy as more donations are expected leading up to the legislative session in January. The recent report covers activity between July 1 and September 26. view article

A visual explainer of AISD’s budget: Austin voters to decide on property tax rate increase
Austin school district voters on Nov. 5 will decide whether to approve raising the property tax rate by 9.1 cents, an increase that would generate $41 million in additional revenue for Austin schools during a time when districts across the state have been slashing their budgets and adopting hefty deficits. Austin district officials have pledged that if voters approved the higher tax rate, they would use the money to fund a $17.3 compensation package for staff members and $3 million for instructional coaches, as well as to help offset the district's $119 million deficit. view article

Texas students with immigrant parents lost out on college aid because of FAFSA glitch
Students from immigrant families appear to have lost out on state grant money for college because of a glitch with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, confirming fears from earlier this year. The revamped FAFSA prevented parents who did not have a Social Security number from adding their financial information online. Students affected by the glitch had to wait months for the U.S. Education Department to come up with a workaround so they could complete the form. Texas colleges distribute state financial aid on a first-come, first-serve basis, which meant students from immigrant families were last in line for aid this year. Texas counselors who help students apply for financial aid to make post-secondary education more accessible say college hopefuls from households with mixed immigration statuses received less money than they were eligible to get. Universities do not track the immigration status of students’ households, making it unclear the extent to which those students were affected. “These are students who are eligible to complete the FAFSA. They're U.S. citizens,” said Andrea Harper, of college access group Breakthrough Central Texas. “When they were placed in the back of the line because of these glitches, they lost out… That's going to impact this group of students for many years, maybe for their whole lives.” view article
Cy-Fair ISD board approves use of disaster pennies to increase tax rate, bringing in $34M in revenue
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD trustees approved a disaster provision Monday that allows for a one-time, 2-cent tax rate increase that will help the state's third largest school district offset a budget deficit. The tax increase, allowed after tornadoes hit the region in January 2023, will generate $33.9 million in revenue for the district, which made drastic cuts to librarians and busing to balance its budget for the 2024-2025 school year. Texas is a young state with older elected officials. Some young leaders are trying to change that.
The average age of Texans last year was 37, while the Legislature’s average age was 55. Hurdles to voting and the unique challenges young candidates encounter fuel the mismatch. Figure out what to wear to be taken seriously; prepare a few one-liners to respond to the inevitable critiques about your age; know the issues facing your district. These are among the tips Rep. Erin Zwiener, a Driftwood Democrat, serves up to young people seeking elected office in Texas. Zwiener was the second youngest elected state lawmaker in Texas when she won a state House seat at 33. On the campaign trail, competitors and potential voters frequently chided Zwiener about her age, questioning whether she had the skills and experience needed for the job. Zwiener had a standard comeback: Lyndon B. Johnson, he future president, was 28 when he was elected to U.S. Congress, and Lloyd Doggett, now in his 29th year in Congress, was 27 when elected to the state Senate. “Some of those lines really helped remind folks that my age wasn’t that unusual,” she said. view article
