Winter storm kicks off with cold front Friday. How long will Austin stay below freezing?

January 2305:00 AM

Cold front day has arrived in Texas, and the forecast is becoming clearer as models come into better agreement on the timing of the arctic air and expected precipitation.  One key change in the latest outlook is a slightly slower-moving arctic front, delaying the onset of wintry weather. Despite the slower timing, significant hazards are still expected across the region, prompting the National Weather Service to upgrade the area to a winter storm warning beginning Saturday morning.  A strong cold front will push into North Texas on Friday before slowly sliding south, reaching Central Texas by Friday night. Ahead of the front, temperatures will briefly climb from the 50s at daybreak to the mid-60s by the afternoon under overcast skies. Light morning showers will give way to more widespread rain, with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing late in the afternoon and evening as the cold front moves in.  view article  arw

Gov. Greg Abbott demands Cy-Fair ISD cancel Islamic Games event: ‘Not welcome in Texas’

January 2208:46 AM

Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to Cy-Fair ISD leaders Wednesday demanding that they cancel a sporting event with the Islamic Games of North America scheduled for later this year, citing alleged ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which Abbott recently declared a "foreign terrorist organization."   "You cannot invite such dangers through the front doors of our schools," he wrote. "Radical Islamic extremism is not welcome in Texas — and certainly not in our schools."  The move comes after the Dallas-area Grapevine-Colleyville ISD canceled a similar event on Tuesday, saying that they had learned that CAIR New Jersey was a sponsor of a related event at one point, according to news reports.  view article  arw

A non-profit fed thousands of hungry Dallas ISD students. A CBS News Texas investigation found, when the work stopped, the fundraising didn’t.

January 2208:37 AM

"Feeding kids. Fueling futures." That's the motto of Hunger Busters, a small but well-connected nonprofit in West Dallas. The idea is to provide a sandwich and sides at the end of the school day to thousands of "food-insecure" Dallas Independent School District students who might not otherwise get dinner at home. A CBS News Texas investigation, though, found that's no longer happening. view article  arw

SAISD board votes to close 75-year-old Westside elementary school

January 2208:30 AM

SAISD Chief of Staff Toni Thompson took his place but did not comment during discussions. view article  arw

As winter storm approaches, Texas officials say the state is ready, won’t repeat 2021 catastrophe

January 2208:30 AM

Nearly five years after Winter Storm Uri sparked widespread power outages and killed hundreds of Texans, officials and residents are once more girding for a round of severe winter weather that will blanket large parts of the state.  Dangerously cold temperatures from an arctic blast will descend upon the state beginning Friday morning, and with the cold come chances of wintry precipitation in the form of snow, sleet and freezing rain. That winter blast is expected to grip the state from Friday evening to early next week.  Gov. Greg Abbott said at a press conference Thursday morning that he was issuing a disaster declaration for 134 counties. Abbott’s office didn’t immediately release the names of those counties, though the governor said the northern two-thirds of the state — from the Panhandle to potentially as far south as the San Antonio region — was expected to be hit the hardest. view article  arw

HISD to pilot ‘Future 2’ K-8 schools focused on AI, design thinking and accelerated learning

January 2208:30 AM

Houston ISD's state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles says the district will pilot two schools designed to train students for a future where artificial intelligence "will be ubiquitous," even as key details about the plan remain unclear.  Miles briefly introduced the so-called "Future 2 Schools" during a back-to-school convocation, alongside a program for remote learning that has since been paused.  Miles' announcement about the new AI-focused schools came at the board of managers' meeting last week, amid renewed talk of potential school consolidations. HISD previously planned to close up to 10 schools next year, but has backed away from that. view article  arw

Greg Abbott calls for Cy-Fair ISD to cut ties with Houston Islamic Games

January 2208:26 AM

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is calling on Cy-Fair ISD to sever its ties with the 2026 Houston Islamic Games, which he says were scheduled for October at Bridgeland High School. In a Wednesday letter to the Houston-area school district, Abbott directed Cy-Fair ISD to terminate any agreements with the Houston Islamic Games. He said the district needed to do so because the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was allegedly one of the sponsors for the youth athletic competition. In November, Abbott declared CAIR — a nationwide civil rights organization — to be a foreign terrorist organization and barred the group from purchasing land in Texas. view article  arw

January 2208:25 AM

When Dallas ISD board members meet Thursday to go over details of the district’s bond proposal, they’ll be looking at two options: One that school leaders say would increase property taxes but allow the district to make much-needed upgrades, and another that would keep property taxes the same but would leave much of that work undone. view article  arw

January 2208:16 AM

School districts in North Texas and beyond should learn from revelations about poor hiring practices at Celina ISD that have come to light after the arrest of a teacher and coach on sexual exploitation charges. William “Caleb” Elliott, a former teacher at Moore Middle School and a coach in the district, is accused of recording boys in the locker room. The 26-year-old faces eight federal counts of sexual exploitation of children, including producing child pornography. For the Fort Worth Stock Show, it’s (icy) business as usual

It wouldn’t be the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo without bad weather.  The winter storm expected to blow through North Texas on Friday and Saturday may disrupt attendance and impact outdoor activities such as the midway or petting zoo; otherwise, the stock show will operate as usual, spokesman Matt Brockman said.   “If it’s sleeting or icy, no one’s going to want to be outside, so those parts of the show will likely close,” he said.   The Fort Worth Stock Show closed in 2021 during COVID-19, a year when Texas had a record cold wave, and during World War II. However, those closures were not weather related.  view article  arw

Bible passages could soon be required reading for Texas public school students

January 2108:30 AM

Texas public schools could soon be required to teach biblical passages in English classes from kindergarten to senior year, according to a draft proposal before the State Board of Education.  The proposal, created by the Texas Education Agency and set to receive a preliminary vote from the state board next week, is part of a novel push to create a common statewide literary canon, with required readings at each grade level, the first of its kind in the United States.  The list’s genres vary, from fairy tales and nursery rhymes for younger students to historical speeches and full novels in high school. Ten excerpts from the Old and New Testaments are dispersed throughout, including “The Shepherd’s Psalm” for seventh graders and the Eight Beatitudes from the book of Matthew in the eighth grade.  view article  arw

Arlington ISD trustees vote to close elementary at the end of the school year

Blanton Elementary will close at the end of the school year and a majority of the campus demolished, trustees unanimously decided Tuesday night.  The 69-year-old building needs major repairs while the school saw declining enrollment and failing academic performance in recent years, officials said.  Board President Justin Chapa said closing the school was one of the most difficult decisions in his time on the board.   “We have closed campuses before but not like this,” Chapa said. “We’ve done consolidations of schools into bright, new, shiny, state-of-the-art buildings. That’s how we have done it in the past. To do it without that waiting on the other side for these students is just not a position that I want to be in.” view article  arw
