Katy ISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski has named Kathryn Leeper as the new principal of Faldyn Elementary at 25615 Clay Road in Katy, the district announced in an October 8 press release. Houston property taxes will not go up thanks to $50 million in relief funds
Houston's property taxes are not going up, after the state announced Wednesday that it would infuse $50 million in disaster relief funds to southeast Texas communities ravaged by the May derecho and Hurricane Beryl. Houston City Council was set to debate the property tax increase at today's meeting, but a group of four city council members that supported raising the city's tax rate by 5 percent withdrew their proposal after hearing word that Houston would now receive help for storm cleanup.

Harvard Elementary School principal removed in surprising shakeup
The principal at Houston's ISD's Harvard Elementary School in the Heights has been ousted, leaving the school community in shock six weeks into the new school year. In a letter to Harvard families, HISD Lead Senior Executive Director Ray Winkler wrote, "I am writing to inform you that Dr. Shelby Calabrese has been put on administrative leave pending investigation, effective Oct. 7, 2024." Calabrese has been the principal at Harvard since June of 2022. Before Harvard, she was the assistant principal at Port Houston Elementary School. Shelby Calabrese was put on administrative leave, according to Houston ISD. In a letter to Harvard families, HISD Lead Senior Executive Director Ray Winkler wrote, "I am writing to inform you that Dr. Shelby Calabrese has been put on administrative leave pending investigation, effective Oct. 7, 2024." Calabrese has been the principal at Harvard since June of 2022. Before Harvard, she was the assistant principal at Port Houston Elementary School. Harvard Elementary is Houston's oldest school and celebrated its 125th birthday last September. The school had a rough start to the school year, suffering through air conditioning issues that caused extreme heat in the classrooms.

The College Station ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday evening to discuss several major topics that could have big impacts on the district. During the workshop meeting board members discussed the issues they’re focused on for the upcoming state legislative session. The Huffman ISD Board of Trustees voted Tuesday morning to raise property taxes by one percent. That may come as a relief to many residents who packed today’s school board meeting, fearing their taxes could go up as much as 25 percent. Board of Trustees President Kirk Vaughn said it was never their intention to raise taxes by 25 percent, but when they posted the public notice about an upcoming vote, it included the maximum tax rate allowed, which is 25 percent.

In a statement shared with KBTX, Somerville ISD said a threat was reported at the elementary/ intermediate campus, putting the school on a “brief hold.” That hold, per the district, allowed local law enforcement to contact the student, arrest them, and remove them from the campus.

Why have Houston ISD’s special education complaints increased despite better compliance?
Elizabeth Hornbeck watched her daughter struggle for years before she finally filed a special education complaint against Houston ISD. As a first-grader, her daughter Alex, who is diagnosed with ADHD, dysgraphia and dyslexia, often came home from school crying. In second grade, Alex had three teachers, including a two-month substitute and new teacher with little special education experience. In third grade, her daughter was placed in a self-contained classroom of children with special-needs students for part of the day, which Hornbeck worried was understaffed and too restrictive for her daughter's abilities.

Venezuelan Gang Member Arrested for Recruiting Houston Middle School Students
Authorities have arrested a confirmed Tren de Aragua gang member, after he allegedly recruited students from two Houston middle schools to join the Venezuelan gang.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Jorgenys Robertson Cova—an illegal alien from Venezuela—entered the United States two years ago.
Cova is suspected to have recruited students from Jane Long Academy and Las Americas—both of which are located in the Houston Independent School District. He was arrested last week after being wanted in Pearland for theft and was accused of recruiting the students.

Prosper adds extra parking, higher pickleball court fencing to Lakewood Park plans
Prosper Town Council members approved an additional $411,819 for Lakewood Park construction during an Oct. 8 meeting. Lakewood Park’s pickleball courts have an existing four-foot fence but residents reached out to request a higher barrier, Parks and Recreation Director Dan Baker said. The park was initially designed with 76 parking spaces, Baker said. However, updated designs that included splitting the three full-size soccer fields into multiple soccer fields require additional parking to prevent overflow parking in the nearby neighborhoods, he said. According to a meeting presentation, 14 of the 52 new parking spaces will be added onto Lakewood Park’s existing parking lot. The remaining 38 spaces will be provided through a new parking lot pad next to the other lot.

Edgewood ISD Superintendent Gets Raise While Students Are Failing
Edgewood ISD extended Superintendent Eduardo Hernández’s contract until 2029 and raised his annual salary to $291,923. Elected trustees in Edgewood Independent School District are coming under fire after extending the superintendent’s contract and increasing his salary despite a vast majority of its students failing academic performance. Superintendent Eduardo Hernández’s contract was recently extended to 2029, and his salary was raised to $291,923 a year. The amount listed excludes the cost of any benefits, such as healthcare, retirement, and allowances. While Hernández is being paid a large salary, Edgewood ISD earned a C rating on its latest assessment. Data also show that the district is failing a vast majority of its students based on its 2022 STAAR results.

Texas reading program allows children to hear the voice of their incarcerated mother
Women’s Storybook Project brings “hope inside dark places.” Many children have a fond memory of their mom reading them a book before bed, flipping through the pages and pausing to explore pictures. Children with incarcerated parents, however, may miss out on this comforting experience. “If you think about the library story time, or someone reading to you in school, or even just a mom sitting down with her children in the evening to read a book, it’s a comfortable and joyful experience,” Jill Gonzalez, executive director of Women’s Storybook Project, said.

Texas DPS Apprehends 22 Special Interest Aliens
At least 1.7 million special interest aliens have entered the country under the Biden-Harris administration. Texas Department of Public Safety officers apprehended a large group of illegal border crossers, including 23 unaccompanied children and 22 special interest aliens. The groups crossed onto private property in Maverick County, as reported by Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesman for DPS. Olivarez posted that of the 23 unaccompanied children, 16 were boys, and seven were girls. The 22 special interest aliens were from Egypt and Turkey. A special interest alien is someone who is identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a potential national security threat due to analysis of their travel patterns and country of origin.

TexasISD.com was the brainchild of Joe F. Smith. Joe retired early from a successful career as Superintendent of Schools for Hudson ISD, deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Due to a long battle with Post-Polio Syndrome the doctor made him hang it up and rest for six months. Never being the kind of person to sit still and also not being the person to listen to his doctor, Joe logged lengthy sessions in front of his PC researching school issues, reading papers and corresponding with his friends and colleagues in the education business.
